Background of the study:
Tourism has emerged as a significant economic driver in Badagry Local Government, especially through its association with traditional cultural festivals. These festivals, known for their historical and ritualistic significance, attract both domestic and international visitors, thereby creating opportunities for cultural exchange and economic upliftment (Balogun, 2023). However, increased tourism has also introduced challenges, including commercialization and alterations in festival practices to cater to tourist expectations. Scholars argue that while tourism can enhance the visibility of indigenous cultures, it may simultaneously dilute their authenticity (Adekunle, 2024). The dual-edged nature of tourism prompts a critical examination of how cultural festivals are being reshaped and the consequent impacts on community identity and cultural heritage. This study intends to dissect the influence of tourism on these festivals, considering both the opportunities and the risks involved.

Statement of the problem:
Tourism in Badagry has transformed traditional cultural festivals by introducing commercialization and external influences that risk eroding their indigenous character. The tension between economic benefits and cultural authenticity has created challenges in maintaining the integrity of these festivals. The study seeks to understand how tourism impacts festival practices and community perceptions (Balogun, 2023).

Objectives of the study:

  1. To examine the influence of tourism on traditional festival practices.

  2. To assess the economic and cultural benefits of tourism in Badagry.

  3. To suggest measures for preserving cultural authenticity amidst tourism growth.

Research questions:

  1. In what ways does tourism affect traditional festival practices?

  2. What are the economic and cultural impacts of tourism on these festivals?

  3. How can cultural authenticity be maintained in a tourist-driven environment?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Tourism significantly alters the traditional aspects of cultural festivals.

  2. Economic benefits from tourism are offset by a loss of cultural authenticity.

  3. Strategic management can balance tourism growth with cultural preservation.

Significance of the study:
The study illuminates the complex relationship between tourism and cultural preservation, offering actionable insights for policymakers and cultural practitioners. Its recommendations aim to harmonize economic development with the protection of indigenous cultural expressions (Balogun, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This research focuses exclusively on the impact of tourism on traditional cultural festivals in Badagry Local Government, without extending to other regions or forms of tourism.

Definitions of terms:
Tourism: The activity of traveling for leisure and cultural exchange.
Cultural Festivals: Traditional celebrations that embody indigenous rituals and customs.
Commercialization: The process of adapting cultural events for economic gain.
